ARSENAL

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas wants to lead his club back into the Premier League title race, after sealing a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Fabregas' first match with the armband resulted in the 1-0 win over Dynamo Kiev, after a week of turmoil that led to William Gallas being stripped of the captaincy.
"We showed we are united,'' said Fabregas - whose next assignment is Chelsea in the league at the weekend - when Arsenal may have Emmanuel Adebayor, Samir Nasri and Bacary Sagna returning from injury.
"We want to get back in the title race, so we have to win,'' he added on Sky Sports News. "But let's not put too much pressure on Sunday's game. We go there with confidence.''
Fabregas set up Nicklas Bendtner's winner three minutes from time against Kiev, although there was confusion over whether the pass was a free-kick or a drop ball that should have been given back to the Ukrainians.
"The referee said 'leave the ball to me' - so I took it and played. We have to accept that,'' Fabregas added on ITV4.
Fabregas has warned the race for the Premier League title is not over.
He said: "The aim is to lift a trophy. We are in the last 16 of the Champions League and are in contention in every competition. We have played only 14 league games this season and it is not over yet. Nothing is done and we will fight until the end.
"Our target is to go there and win, because we could get some points back. The other teams at the top have some difficult games as well, so we will see.
"We have to play as a team and when we play good and quick passing, we can play against anybody and win.
"Arsenal never go for a draw, we always go for a win and I am sure a club like Chelsea will do the same as well because every time I have played against them they have always gone forwards, to go for the victory.
"It was a normal game for me and I don't really think about it. I am committed to the game and I do not realise if I am wearing the armband or not.
"I just to try to play for Arsenal and my team-mates and give my best.''
Gallas had a strike disallowed at the Emirates Stadium and also blocked a Robin van Persie shot that appeared to be heading on.
"I believe his focus was great,'' manager Arsene Wenger said of his fellow Frenchman. "He wanted to do well, and you could see he was completely committed in the game.
"Overall, I feel he did well. The crowd responded well. Somewhere, they acknowledged that he was a committed captain - and I was very happy that the crowd reacted in this way to him.''
Wenger was pleased with Fabregas too, adding: "He was very good tonight for me - focused for 90 minutes in the game, worked hard defensively and offensively. It was not easy in midfield, because they closed us down very well. I expected them to go up a little bit in the second half, but they didn't.''
Wenger believes Gallas was the victim of a "witch hunt'', after he revealed rifts in the Arsenal dressing room.
"It was based neither on the man himself nor his quality as a player but more on his blunder,'' the Gunners boss told French television channel Canal+, of his punishment of the former Chelsea player.
"He didn't intend to be malicious, but it put his team under enormous pressure. He will remain himself, and it can free him as a player if there is less pressure.''
Of the criticism aimed at Gallas during his captaincy, Wenger - who admitted last weekend was "one of the most difficult'' he has endured in north London - added: "It was a witch hunt - and everything that he did, even when it was good, was bad.
"In these conditions, the player had no chance.''

National Kick A Ginger Day

Jing Xiang Investigates Facebook Group over 'National Kick A Ginger Day'
They say blonds have more fun, but it was redheads who might have got a bigger kick on Thursday, dubbed by some as Kick a Ginger Day.
Across the country, school boards had to contend with a joke from an episode of the satirical animated show South Park that has spiralled into a day of promoting violence.
RCMP in B.C. are investigating the 14-year-old administrator of a Facebook group called "National Kick a Ginger Day, are you going to do it?"
The Vancouver Island boy said the group, which had nearly 5,000 members from across Canada and internationally, was only a joke and he is sorry.
The page, which urges members to "get them steel toes ready," had garnered hundreds of messages. Many were from people claiming to have already kicked redheads that day; others expressed outrage.
The page's teenage administrator said he didn't make the group, but inherited it after its original creator got in trouble.
"It was a joke," he said. "I'll message everybody and say I'm sorry that this offended people."
Comox Valley RCMP Const. Tammy Douglas said the group is being investigated and those involved could face charges.
"We do treat this sort of thing seriously," she said. "This is sort of inciting hate. It's a hate crime really."
Ironically, the day falls in the middle of the international Bullying Awareness Week.
In St. John's, N.L., schools warned students they'd be disciplined if they acted on the joke.
Tony Stack, principal of St. Peter's, a grades 7 to 9 school near St. John's, said they were told about the event by parents of red-headed kids.
In Flin Flon, Man., an elementary school sent a letter home to parents alerting them and their children to the possibility of disturbances.
And in Sylvan Lake, Alta., one red-haired student said she and her 13-year-old sister were punched and kicked by their peers when they got to school.
In the episode of South Park in question, Ginger Kids, one character -- Eric Cartman -- begins a campaign against red heads, calling them soulless and inherently evil.
Brenda Morrison, a criminology professor at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., said she was "shocked" to find out about the day.

Arsenal Lose 3 nil to Manchester City

MATCH REPORT
by: Ng Jing Xiang (ARSENAL FAN)
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger stripped William Gallas of the captaincy at Eastlands - then saw his team stripped bear after a 3-0 defeat at Manchester City.
A wonderful goal from Robinho after Stephen Ireland had made the breakthrough gave Manchester City the victory they deserved on the balance of play.
Substitute Daniel Sturridge completed a miserable day for Arsenal by scoring from the penalty spot in stoppage time.
Without Gallas at the back, the Gunners looked vulnerable and their title hopes look a distant dream after their fifth defeat in the league.
Gallas did not travel with the rest of the squad after making critical comments about the team in midweek and goalkeeper Manuel Almunia wore the armband instead.
The France defender questioned their fighting sprit and also spoke of squabbling behind the scenes.
It is understood he was omitted from the team as Wenger was dismayed by the player's comments.
Arsenal went into this match without the likes of Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas, Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor as well as Gallas and it showed.
City almost took the lead in the 27th minute after a flowing move, which was started by Shaun Wright-Phillips.
He sent Darius Vassell clear and Benjani Mwauwari got a touch to his cross at the back post, only to deflect his effort wide.
Robin van Persie then needed brief treatment six minutes later after being left winded following a challenge from Vincent Kompany.
Arsenal almost took the lead from the free-kick with Joe Hart - who had made a quick recovery from an ankle injury - beating away Samir Nasri's shot.
The ball broke to Nicklas Bendtner and he cleverly hooked it back to Alex Song. He was clear on goal but sent his effort wide from close range.
Ireland then went on a surging run but there was no one on hand to help him out and Almunia mopped up with ease.
There was a tense, nervous edge to this game, which meant little entertainment for the supporters as half-time approached.
Benjani got on the end of a cross from Wright-Phillips in stoppage time but he sent his header wide.
Immediately afterwards Ireland took advantage of a mix-up between Gael Clichy and Mikael Silvestre to put the home side ahead.
He clipped the ball over Almunia to give City the boost they required going into the second half.
Arsenal were clearly rattled at going behind and Abou Diaby skipped forward in the 47th minute, only to fire wide of the post.
Four minutes later Van Persie saw his free-kick ruffle the side netting after Micah Richards had been penalised for a challenge on the Dutchman.
City, however, responded and extended their lead with a magnificent goal from Robinho in the 57th minute after some superb work from Wright-Phillips.
The England midfielder won the ball off Van Persie in the middle of the park before releasing a perfect through ball for Robinho.
The Brazilian showed a cool head as Almunia advanced to lob the ball over the goalkeeper for his ninth goal of the season.
This was now a test of character for Arsenal and Bendtner should have pulled a goal back four minutes later.
He latched on to a ball from substitute Aaron Ramsey but his weak shot was easily parried by Hart.
Robinho then sent a close-range header wide of the post before finding the next again only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.
Arsenal kept pushing forward and Denilson tried his luck in the 76th minute.
Robinho almost made it 3-0 three minutes later when he latched on to a ball from substitute Elano.
He took it around Almunia only for Djourou to clear his effort off the line.
Van Persie then found the net after clipping the ball out of Hart's hand but it was disallowed.
Sturridge completed the rout in stoppage time from the penalty spot after being upended by Johan Djourou to add to Arsenal's misery.
